SPENCER CHALK-LEVY

Spencer Chalk-Levy was born and raised in New York City and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, continuing studies from 2014-2020 at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna. He currently works and resides in Vienna.

The art of Spencer Chalk-Levy reworks and restructures classical Western genres, styles of illustration, and cultural norms into an aesthetic all his own. Chalk-Levy  taps into traditional techniques and the pictorial language of historical art genres, while injecting contemporary elements to create a colorful and detailed aesthetic. The emotional resonance of staged scenes and characters elicit extrospection into his personal narrative, allowing the viewer to contemplate the sequel of the scenery.

Colliding traditional genres, illustration, and subject matter, Chalk-Levy has developed a unique style with a distinctive design. In his recent experiments in the realm of digitally woven tapestries, he explores how contemporary re-interpretations and the use of advanced production processes impact their meaning and tradition.
