JOSEPH LEROUX

Artist Joseph Leroux in his studio

Joseph Leroux is a Philadelphia based artist and curator. Leroux maintains a personal studio practice while co-owning and operating Bertrand Productions, a contemporary art gallery located in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA USA.

Leroux grew up in Newton Falls, a small secluded milltown in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York. His family consisted of mechanics, lumberjacks and laborers who worked in factory jobs in the dwindling industries of the area. Leroux's surroundings gave him the drive to pursue alternate opportunities while witnessing the vanishing occupations of previous generations.

Leroux had an early fascination with music, especially all things MTV. He began playing guitar and drums at a young age and was entranced by early music videos and the ability for imagery to intensify our audial experience. His interest in music led him to pursue an undergraduate education at the State University of New York at Potsdam where the Crane School of music is located. Soon after his arrival, he was captivated with an art exhibition and became intrigued with the visual arts. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from SUNY Potsdam in 2007 and went on to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin Madison where he received a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture in 2010.

Leroux is currently developing a series of spray painted works depicting crowd scenes in various states of celebration and unrest. Each painting utilizes up to 150 layers of urethane spray paint that are meticulously calculated and applied. Leroux's practice frequently explores social circumstances through individually developed processes.
